This place really has something for all! An ancient port city founded by the Phoenicians 2,800 years ago and occupied by the Muslim Moors for close to eight centuries, Malaga today is considered the capital of the beautiful “Costa del Sol”, with glorious weather (think San Diego climate but a bit warmer), a beautifully renovated historic downtown and port, and beaches only a few minutes from town.
There are literally hundreds of outdoor restaurants and cafes both in the city center as well as along the port, so no shortage of places to sample the freshest seafood and delicious (and inexpensive) Spanish wines. Your favorite locale could easily become the “Mercado Central Atarazanas”, which is a lively open market where you can shop for fresh foods or belly up to one of the many kiosks for fresh seafood and “una caña”, a small glass of beer served refreshingly ice cold!
A favorite destination for northern Europeans, Malaga’s rich history of art and culture is displayed throughout the city, including the Picasso Museum with 285 of the artist’s work, opened in 2003 to celebrate Picasso’s birthplace and where he spent the first 10 years of his life; the beautiful Renaissance cathedral, that was converted from the original mosque once the Muslims were finally expelled from Spain around 1490; and the two massive citadels of Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, also built by the Moors and sitting high above the city, offering the best views over the city and across to the African coast.
As for beaches, try the local “Playa Malagueta”, only a 10-minute walk from the city center, or “Pedregalejo”, with its vibrant boardwalk scene of cozy bars and restaurants, just a 10-minute taxi ride from town. Or venture a bit farther to the upscale Marbella and its swank partner, Puerto Banus, just an hour’s drive from Malaga. And for day trips or weekends, visit the cozy Spanish town of Estepona or even Morocco, just across the Strait of Gibraltar, or take a short drive to the beautiful Andalusian cities of Sevilla, Granada, and Cordova, all within just a couple hours of Malaga.
Anytime of the year is good to visit but expect company during the summer vacation months of July and August…but not to worry, this colorful and dynamic city and its surroundings will not disappoint!
